Govt. to Launch Kerala Housing Scheme for Transgender Community

The state government of Kerala will launch transgender housing scheme for people belonging to transgender community. This can be considered one of first kind of housing scheme that offers houses for homeless transgenders. Government will launch this scheme in association with local bodies & NGO’s under State Government’s LIFE (Livelihood Inclusion & Financial Empowerment).

According to the sources, 14 flat complexes (G+3 structure) & each unit in 500 sq. feet will be built. For the completion of this project 123 acre land has been found.

LIFE has prepared a draft that include names of 91,047 beneficiaries, including 466 transgender, 1,706 unwed mothers & 749 HIV+ people.
Mentally disturbed, disabled, seriously-ill, widows etc. will also be considered as beneficiaries.

Houses under Kerala Transgender Housing Scheme

There are two types of houses will be provided by SJD (Social Justice Department), mentioned below:

  • Short-term shelter homes
  • Housing colony only for sexual minority

Department will implement this housing scheme into various phases out of which, night shelters will be offered to transgender community. Officials are identifying land to construct houses in Ernakulam & to make their dream of houses come true. Hope this housing scheme provide safe dwelling unit to such candidates.
